awareness raising, sensitization & donation of Preventive materials towards the fight against Ebola virus in Taiama & Njala Communities on the 16th August, 2014.
Ebola virus disease (EVD) is considered one of the most aggressive viruses known to date in part because of its rapidity to kill, which can be within one week of exposure or three to four days from which the first symptoms become apparent. This leaves very little time for any treatment to act and save the sick individual.
Ebola is real, it kills. To date, a total of 815 cases have been tested (suspected and confirmed), laboratory confirmed cases number 296 confirmed deaths and 300 cases discharged. All of these cases occurred in Kailahun, Kenema, Bo, Moyamba, Port Loko and the Western Area. Over the past months, suspected cases have been rumored in the Northern part of the country. The Ebola virus disease is highly contagious and symptoms normally appear after an incubation period of 2 to 21 days. The fight against Ebola is of national concern.
Due to the above background, the Mid South Africa Link in Collaboration with the School of Community Health Sciences, Njala University Bo Campus and UMC Taiama Health Management Team has just ended a two days awareness raising, sensitization and donation of preventive materials to the Taiama and Njala communities.
The team believes that just after this sensitization the people of Taiama and its environs will definitely be aware of the Ebola Virus, and combine with concerted efforts to prevent Ebola from spreading the virus within Taiama and its environs.
The ceremony was climaxed with an opening prayer both in Christian and Muslim; representation was drawn from religious leaders, traditional leaders, youth groups, women groups, petty traders, churches and mosques within the Taiama and Njala Communities, Korie Chiefdom Moyamba District.

Taiama UMC Health Center Update
We’re thankful our medical team arrived safely traveling through Freetown to Taiama and Njala on Saturday. On Sunday they were able to set up medical equipments, medicines and check on the children. The Sierra Leone Spring 2011 Pediatrics Missions is headed by Robert Hill along side with Dr. Debra Selby the Doctor, Carol Doster the assistant, Babara Allison the Pharmacist and Brigitte Wills the Education facilitator for the Medical Team. The Medical Team arrived with a medicine value at $ 5500,00, and the overall medical team budget is $ 14,000,00. To help achieve the goal of the medical team, a local medical team volunteers, assist with the preliminary evaluation of the children's needs as well as follow-up care.
The local team is headed by Jusufu Tommy, with other three volunteers Samuel Kangaju, Lucy kangaju and Evelyn Tommy. The team leader Robert Hill said, "It is the goal of the mission team to provide the best possible medical care available for the children of Taiama and the surrounding villages. These goals are achieved through the efforts of many people located in Paris, Tennessee involved with the First United Methodist Church and Tennessee Valley Community Church. It is the desire of each team member that the Good News and love made available to us through Jesus the Christ is shown and demonstrated to each child seen at the clinic".
In her presentation she sensitized the participants on how to use the medical kits, she further encouraged the women to demonstrate what they have learned from Dr. Debro.
One of the participants said it was such a privilege to gather with the medical team and worship through songs. And she also expressed her gratitude and thanks to Dr. Debro for the help in preventing child death in their communities. "We made our way back to Njala. Many of us will be sore by tomorrow after enduring the tugs of 5 or 8 children hanging onto us for treatment, but it proved to be completely worth it. "The Lord has already taught us so much on this trip. We have gained sensitivity to the simple form of worship through Mercy. We have gained sensitivity to what our heart is truly focused on," said Carol.

Bridget, a volunteer teacher from the Lake Wood School, Paris Tennessee.
she is giving new hope to the pupil's of UMC Primary School in Taiama After we had lunch, we were about to go out to individuals to share the gospel (the word of Christ), when a group of kids came running in their school uniforms to us. The Lake Wood School, Paris, Tennessee Elementary donated books to kids at Taiama UMC primary school, that showed the Tennessee families are building a long lasting link with the Taiama Communities; for the Taiama community to be a self sustainable developed community. |
Each book was received by a student, and the children extended their gratitude and appreciation to the children of the Lake Wood Elementary School, Paris ,Tennessee . Brigitte encouraged the children to make use of the books and take their school work seriously, as they are the future leaders of these communities. The children ended by offering a prayer and a song.
Dr. Debra Selby said, "I come to treat the children because they are the future of this great nation. I come in the name of the great healer, Jesus Christ, to bring better health and to show the love of Christ to many neighbors 5000 miles away".
